In-situ applications (i.e. in place)

In situations where removal of the soil is impractical, bioremediation can be used to treat the contaminant in place without disturbing the site.   The key to the success of the process is the biocatalyst which provides oxygen at the cellular level to the microorganisms even in anaerobic conditions.  Treatment time usually 8 to 15 months. Representative In-situ bioremediation projects closed in southern California are detailed on pages to the left.

Examples:

Hyatt Islandia Hotel, Mission Bay, San Diego, CA
Contaminant:   Diesel levels as high as 144,000 ppm
Description:  Two plumes under a parking garage/hotel located on Mission Bay.  Contaminated smear zone about 5 feet bgs.  Daily tidal action.  Salt water.  Owner had tried a vapor extraction system for four years with no results.  Started with .25" of free product on water.  After 30 days free product was gone.  Project going for 12 months.  Last three quarters showed water at non detect and soil TPH levels reduced by 85%.
Lead Agency:  County of San Diego, Hazardous Materials Management Division

RV Dealer , City of Los Angeles, CA
Contaminant:  Diesel levels as high as 44,000 ppm
Description: Plume 35' deep under a parking and building. Used infiltration trenches and sumps to distribute inoculate to plume.   Soil TPH levels reduced by 85% to 95%.
Lead Agency:  Los Angeles Bureau of Fire Prevention and Public Safety

Airport,  City of Los Angeles, CA
Contaminant:  Jet A Fuel levels exceeding 25,000 ppm
Description: 13,000 cubic yard plume down 95 feet below grade.  Hydrant line spilled 30,000+ gallons of Jet A fuel into soil.  After 4 months TPH levels below state action levels.  Project Closed after 8 months.
Lead Agency:  City of Los Angeles Fire Department

High Rise Office, Warner Center, Woodland Hills,  CA
Contaminant:  Diesel with levels exceeding 6,000 ppm.
Description: 1,200 cubic yards soil down to groundwater at 12 bgs.  Bioremediation system included pumping groundwater, treating adding a bioinoculate and reintroducing back to soil through infiltration trenches.  After 8 months soil levels below action levels.
Lead Agency:  Los Angeles Regional Water Quality Control Board.
